He is also the Associate Director of Illinois-Indiana Sea Grant College Program, a Clinical Professor in the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering, and a Research Professor in the Department of Natural Resources and Environmental Sciences at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. He has been a Faculty Affiliate in the Center for Nanoscale Science and Technology and in the Illinois Informatics Institute since both institutes were established. In 2006, Lin was a Faculty Fellow at the National Center for Supercomputing Applications. Lin came to the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign in 2002 from the University of Wisconsin-Madison where he earned his Ph.D. in geological engineering.
Lin’s current research interests include: (1) groundwater flow and subsurface heat transfer, (2) geothermal exchange and renewable energy, (3) groundwater and surface interactions, (4) fiber-optic distributed temperature sensing (FO-DTS) applications in water-food-energy nexus, and (5) climate change connection to public health. Lin has devoted his efforts to serving professional communities. He is a fellow of the Geological Society of America.
